This introductory workshop provides an accessible overview of Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) for psychosis. It is suitable for anyone interested in understanding distressing voices, paranoia, unusual beliefs, and other experiences associated with psychosis, including practitioners, peer support workers, experts by experience, family members, carers, students, and support staff.
Participants will be introduced to key principles of Compassion Focused Therapy, including how evolution has shaped the human brain with a natural bias towards threat detection and self-protection. The workshop explores how processes such as dissociation, vigilance to threat, shame, trauma, and social rank concerns can contribute to experiences such as voice-hearing and unusual beliefs.
Drawing on a compassion-focused understanding of psychosis, participants will learn how these experiences can often be understood as meaningful attempts to manage threat, distress, or difficult life experiences. The workshop introduces compassion-focused formulations of voice-hearing and unusual beliefs, with particular attention to their protective functions and their links to trauma, relationships, and emotional wellbeing.
The training also introduces the concept of the compassionate self and explores how cultivating compassionate mind states can create a sense of safeness that supports recovery and wellbeing.
