This year, we are celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Compassionate Mind Foundation. As part of our year of celebration, we invite you to join us on Wednesday, 24th June for a special, live conversation between Dr Deborah Lee and Professor Paul Gilbert OBE, where they will discuss and reminisce on the development of Compassion Focused Therapy.

Paul will talk about his early life in Africa, his experiences of boarding school and how an initial degree in economics eventually led to his study of psychology, and resulted in an over 50 year career as a clinical psychologist and researcher. From working as a psychiatric night nursing assistant on an acute admission ward, to a PhD at the University of Edinburgh with Dr Ivy Blackburn (who did the first cognitive therapy trial in the UK), Paul would go on to publish several books, specialising in evolutionary approaches to psychology and the study and treatment of depression and mood disorders, and pioneer CFT, which is now a fast growing international psychotherapy. You’ll hear about how he brought together a wide range of knowledge bases, from Jungian archetypes to neuroscience to Buddhist mindfulness practices, to build a psychotherapy based on a theory of mind that places compassion at the heart of its theory and practice.

Deborah will share elements of her own journey into CFT, spanning more than 20 years. We'll hear how she became one of the leading CFT practitioners and trainers, and an internationally recognised specialist in working with trauma and PTSD, publishing The Compassionate Mind Approach to Recovering from Trauma in 2012. . We’ll hear about her extensive experiences of working clinically with trauma, and of her work with veteranspopulations and charities like Help for Heroes. Deborah will also share the incredible work she is doing in the area of compassionate leadership, and her work within that Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust that has developed and rolled out a compassionate leadership programme, training 1500+ of its staff, and integrated a compassion focused approach into their staff induction and management training with inspiring results.

Together, Deborah and Paul will discuss some of their early clients, sharing key learning points, before reflecting on the future of CFT. We hope you can join us for an evening with two of the central figures in CFT, friends and colleagues for over 20 years. Come and enjoy, and be inspired by their many years of compassionate learning and practice.
