The Four Limitless Qualities - A Broader Context for Understanding Compassion
The Four Limitless Qualities, or Brahmaviharas, are described as loving-kindness (metta), compassion (karuna), sympathetic joy (mudita) and equanimity (upekka). They are an ancient Buddhist teaching for expanding the reach of our hearts and minds so that all of life is held within our compassionate awareness.
The way we apply this teaching is by responding to the people and situations in our lives with friendliness, curiosity and warmth. This is the real meaning of metta, which is commonly translated as ‘loving-kindness’. Where this friendly warmth encounters suffering it draws on qualities that turn it into compassion. Moreover, where this friendly warmth encounters the simple good things in life and the happiness of others it becomes sympathetic joy. This brings balance so we are not overly focused on suffering. Normally these qualities are limited to those we like. However, when we practice equanimity this extends the reach of our minds beyond our habitual likes and dislikes to include those we do not like and those who are strangers. In this context equanimity means an even minded and warm engagement with all; it is not cool and indifferent.
Choden will relate the teaching of the Four Limitless Qualities to the practice of compassion in CFT, and he will show how this teaching is a way of contextualising compassion in a different way by seeing it as part of bodhicitta, or the awakening mind, that has these four natural expressions. In this way the ancient wisdom of Buddhism supports the modern insights of psychology and science.
The session will include teaching, guided practices, sharing and discussion.
