Dr Jen Swanston and Dr Katherine Hodson will introduce attendees to their book, The Compassionate Parenting Workbook. During this presentation, participants will have the opportunity to explore the common humanity shared by all parents, of how one experiences the realities of parenting differently to one’s idealised expectations, some of the factors that contribute to this difference, and the impact it can have on families. We will examine the importance of adding compassion into traditional parenting models. This is in light of the threat responses parents tend to experience during difficult parenting moments with their own, unique children who may not always respond as they are ‘supposed to’ with traditional approaches. We will discuss how adding in compassionate parenting also helps prevent parents from falling back into old habits that have not proven effective for them in the past.
We will share the journey we went on when writing this book, striving to develop a fully accessible, experiential, and realistic parenting CFT book for every reader - whether clinician or parent, for children with multiple presentations, including those who are neurodivergent.
Participants will be introduced to the four step ‘EASE’ model, that is at the core of the book, designed to be a straight forward model to help increase the parents sense of control and effectiveness in difficult parenting moments, without evoking shame in either the parent or the child. We will use interactive and playful exercises during the presentation to bring the EASE model alive, as these elements are a key aspect of the CFT approach that helps make it powerful when working with children and their families. We will additionally present case studies based on applying the principles from ‘The Compassionate Parenting Workbook’ to help increase participant’s understanding of how this approach can be helpful.
About the book
Title: The Compassionate Parenting Workbook
Author: Dr Jen Swanston & Dr Katherine Hodson
Publisher: Robinson
Description
Parenting is hard. We live in a world that is rife with criticism and, unfortunately, this has a vast impact upon our wellbeing, with self criticism leading to anxiety, guilt, sadness, shame and hopelessness. This naturally makes parenting feel even harder.
On the other hand, applying self-compassion can make you more emotionally resilient, have lower stress levels and healthier relationships. Being more compassionate gives you a greater sense of perceived personal control within your life, and these skills are proven to be passed on to children too - with better life outcomes for those who are brought up to receive compassion and be compassionate.
This book will introduce compassion to your life as a person, a parent, and in your approach to your child. Hopefully in the future, this will mean your child will adopt this way of relating to themselves and to others too.
USING THIS WORKBOOK, READERS WILL LEARN ABOUT
- Managing the systems that drive us, cause us to react to threats, or soothe us.
- Developing a compassionate mind for yourself, and encouraging that in your children.
- Putting compassionate skills in action for specific problems like eating, sleeping and behaviour.
Filled with interactive exercises and practical skills, The Compassionate Parenting Workbook will guide you in your journey to be a more compassionate parent.
