About This Course

Choden will offer a teaching and practice on the principle of mandala which describes how the mind is a dynamic energy system with a centre and a periphery. Most of us are caught up on the periphery, tossed and turned by our conflicting emotions, but we can find the centre though practicing mindfulness and compassion. This allows us to find a place of stillness and peace whilst also learning to take care of the different parts of ourselves. We align with our core whilst holding the space for whatever arises in our inner world. We then bring this compassion presence into our lives in how we relate to other people.

This understanding of mandala is drawn from Tibetan Buddhism. At the centre of the mandala is the meditation deity that represents the core of our being that is intrinsically well and at peace no matter what difficulties and issues assail us in life. It sits in a palace of non-dual awareness with four doors representing each of the main emotional afflictions: anger, desire, jealousy and arrogance. According to the Tibetan approach we work with our main issue or affliction which then becomes a doorway to the centre. For example, if anger is what troubles us most then we learn to relate to it compassionately and understand what drives it. It then reveals its wisdom nature which becomes an access point to the core of our being.

In working with Paul Gilbert, Choden developed the psychological mandala that is an adaption of the Tibetan one. Here the center is depicted by the compassionate self which holds the centre ground in the psyche. Through cultivating the qualities of strength, wisdom, courage and benevolence we learn to occupy the centre of our energy system and from this place we learn to respond with compassion to the different parts of ourselves that play out on the periphery. These might include anxious parts, angry parts, parts carrying shame and self-critical parts.

Choden will offer a practice for aligning with our compassionate self and holding these parts with compassion: seeing them with the eyes of wisdom, staying in relationship with them and offering them support and warmth. For those who are trained in psychological approaches to compassion, such as CFT, this session will provide an alternative perspective to enrich the compassion practice you are currently doing.
