We all know how tough parenting can be. And for parents of neurodivergent children, there are often additional challenges which can result in the traditional parenting approaches not always fully ‘fitting’ their children’s needs, or not shifting behavioural or psychological difficulties as expected. Therefore we find that a high proportion of the parents who present in our clinics have a neurodivergent child; and they often tell us at assessment how desperate they feel, and that nothing they have been recommended seems to be working.
This is where Compassion Focused Therapy comes into its own. This workshop will give a practical introduction into compassion-focused approaches with children, young people and their families, exploring how this work can be specifically tailored for working with neurodivergent young people.
It will have a strong emphasis on translating ideas into everyday practice, using multiple, practical exercises and case examples to help participants deepen their confidence in supporting neurodivergent young people, their families, and the wider systems around them. Knowledge of the basics of Compassion Focused Therapy would be useful but is not essential.
To come away with some knowledge of:
1) The foundations of compassionate parenting, and how to tailor this approach for neurodivergent children
2) Formulation skills to allow attendees to develop a shared understanding with families as to the reasons behind a young person’s difficulties, including their critical mind, their protective strategies and any unintended consequences.
3) The ‘EASE model of compassionate parenting’ for both parents and for neurodivergent young people.
4) Compassionate approaches for the wider system, which is often essential when working with neurodivergence.
