Event Description

Conflict is a common theme and occurrence in therapeutic relationships, often characterised by disaffiliation and angry/rejecting feelings that constitute ruptures in the therapeutic alliance. Looking beyond the confines of psychotherapy training, one potential means of entraining embodied distress tolerance and compassion is through the martial arts. Drawing on the wisdom of such traditions, most (traditional) martial arts training centres around non-violent conflict resolution and becoming a fearless and compassionate human being (Kamen, 2017), as well as cultivating virtues and character development (Hackney, 2011).

Through a broad range of martial arts exercises, clinicians/practitioners shall experience and further develop their skills in the following:

• Maintaining balance, stability, flexibility and (compassionate) responsiveness across emotional states in the context of relational threat

• Deep distress tolerance to others (and one's own) anger, encompassing being with/absorbing/blending without excessive Threat System (re)activity

• How to rapidly and fluidly switch between motivational systems to stay affiliatively engaged and resolve/repair alliance ruptures

• Dynamically responding to fears, blocks and resistances to compassion by redirecting energy flow • Embodying and enacting fierce compassion
